Episode 65: Do They Know It’s Christmas Time
We must live in the South Africa, because it is getting warmer, but it is Christmas time again. I’m not really sure how this works or why it keeps happening. I mean, I know life goes faster as you age, but this is getting ridiculous. Well, anyway, this week our “supergroup” discusses the BNL cover of the 80’s original supergroup. Do we spread the love or Hater-Aid?
Live video version (don’t be fooled… it says “Christmastime” but it is the right video)

Ok… here is the list of every cover of this song I could find. Enjoy!
“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was re-recorded three times: in
Air Supply (2009) – THEY’RE BACK! And yes, it is Air Supply as we know them. And this is glorious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6Jn4Tmir3M
Badly Drawn Boy (2010) – slow, intimate, and acoustic. Done for AV Undercover
Barenaked Ladies (2004) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOfrXJu8XSw
Bouncing Souls and Weston (1994) – african drums with heavy metal and punk (WHAT?!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uggdaiuQyJE&feature=youtu.be
Dance Aid (1994) really fast techno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyVzSrLozTM&feature=youtu.be
De Toppers (2006) – Ok… imagine that George Michael wanted to be cheesy on purpose and made a video to go with it filmed at Disney in Santa business suits. it is well sung but oh my! https://youtu.be/sZ5-bYrPJ6k
Echoing Green (1999) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wsyen2xoorM Wonder what it would sound like with new age-y music in background and a “not quite Donny Ozmond”, waiting for a nice massage, but then want to turn it techno and dance on that massage table… that’s what you get here.
Far & Chino Moreno (1997) – I don’t like this… badly sung and it was a slow punk version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mka-bVLPPeA
Fucked Up (2010) – Heavy metal but they seem to think that long long feedback is what makes something heavy metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jd4RFPPYxp8&feature=youtu.be
The Genuine Solutions Group (2010) – a not quite as good as the original attempt to raise money
Glee Cast Version (2011)
Music Box Mania – just what you would expect (https://www.whosampled.com/cover/629425/Music-Box-Mania-Do-They-Know-It%27s-Christmas-Band-Aid-Do-They-Know-It%27s-Christmas%3F/
Rainbow Trust Children’s Company (2010) – not bad but I would only buy it if I knew the group
Richard Cheese Version (2006)
Shirley Clamp (2004) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-xdpVq2ysQ want to hear a disco-y techno-y aughts version?
Slade (1985) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFpOqxf4dH4 (think Christmas-y Run Runaway)… it’s actually pretty cool
Spitting Image – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMjI_1FRYgI
British satirical puppet show Spitting Image spoofs the Band Aid & USA For Africa singles, proclaiming their fear of Bob Geldof.
Stunned Stylz (2001) – Electronica Dance remix… ugh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-iAHE2Ix0o&feature=youtu.be
Temperance (1995) – Happy Techno… think “Neverending Story 33 1/3” but played at 45. Then Destiny’s Child for bridge https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7wPaS8ceO8&feature=youtu.be
Winter Wonderland (1997) – Elves hopped up on cocaine and put to techno https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGKXOqes9pM
